Qualifications and experience

Donella completed her B Sc degree majoring in Zoology and Microbiology/Plant Pathology at PietermaritzburgUniversityin 1974. She then moved to the Universityof Cape Townfor an Honours degree in Zoology and Higher Diploma in Education. After teaching Biology for a year at Ixopo High School she returned to UCT for an M Sc in Zoology (Fluctuations in populations and habitat use within a changing environment), spending many hours at Rondevlei Bird Sanctuary.

After another year of teaching Biology at Pinelands High School Donella was at home supporting her husband in Parish ministry and caring for three young children until 1994, when she started working part-time as a Research Assistant in the Zoology Department at UCT. In October 1997 Donella began coordinating the Coordinated Avifaunal Roadcounts (CAR) Project at the ADU, also part-time. These roadcounts of many threatened species are conducted by farmers, bird club members, nature conservationists and some schools. Having grown up in the country with an interest in conservation ecology and birds, Donella particularly enjoys the contact with people who share this interest and are gathering valuable information about large birds on farms.

From 2008-2010 through funding from the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund Donella and James Harrison worked on the Big Birds on Farms project which focussed on involving people in the conservation of biodiversity in the Cape Floristic region. Through workshops, interviews and collaboration with farmers and those in the agricultural field we were able to develop the “Desirable Dozen” measures to encourage the conservation of biodiversity on farms. We published an illustrated booklet explaining these measures and giving accounts of CAR species in the region. These booklets have been distributed widely by Landcare, of Department of Agriculture, and CAR participants http://www.adu.org.za/docs/boer_vir_die_toekoms_lr.pdf

http://www.adu.org.za/docs/farming_for_the_future_lr.pdf

In 2008, after their youngest child completed school, Chris and Donella moved to Villiersdorp where they have established Riversong Cottage Retreat on the edge of the village. Donella still works six hours daily coordinating the CAR project, travelling to UCT mid-week.
